The Hoop And Grapes

You're barred - the landlord's view

Dating from 1721, The Hoop and Grapes has a fascinating history. Saved from demolition in the 1990s and now a grade-II listed building, this pub was the location for secret ‘Fleet’ weddings during the 18th century. Originally opposite the Fleet prison, through a legal loophole secret weddings could be carried out away from the homes of the participants and without bands.

Now a cosy, traditional City of London pub, The Hoops and Grapes has a friendly, busy atmosphere. The pub offers a good range of pub food, great beers, wines and a selection of malt whiskies and cigars. Fairtrade coffee and teas are also served throughout the day.

SKY and ESPN in HD and 3Dshown on big screen TV`s in the main bar , function room , lounge and beer garden.

The heated beer garden and balcony are popular throughout the year and the function room is free to hire. Darts ,table football and poker can be played in the games room.

9th Feb 2012 - For a pub on a busy main road surrounded by nothing but offices, this does surprisingly well. It's an island of tranquility from the buzz outside. Catering for the local office types, it's great for a business lunch or even just lunch. After work is much the same story, colleagues having a drink before dashing off to the tube. Service is friendly and efficient, even when busy you get seen to quite quickly. Good range of cold fizzy stuff and warm flat stuff so something for all drinkers. There's a dining room and somewhat surprisingly for the location a beer garden, plus two function rooms one of which has a balcony. Being so close to the tourist traps of St Pauls and Fleet street, it's also thankfully free from braying tourists.

4th Mar 2005 - Used to be Mash Tun and I never made it there. Not a bad boozer - nice in the summer as they have patio/terrace bit. Food always seems to take forever to order and they run out of everything very quickly. Ok for a pint though

6th Dec 2004 - Not that good compared to most Shepherds Neame pubs, but it does the job. The beer garden is certainly an advantage in the summer. Service has never been that great and the food isn't up to much really. Not really worth it unless you want to site outside.
