26th Feb 2013 - Upgrading this pub from a 2 to a 3, as it has got better over the last few years. Still very busy on the long summer evenings, but I prefer this one in the darker months, tucked inside with a nice glass of red. It's basically split in two - upon entering you are in the small front bar, but walk through the narrowing passage and you emerge into the larger back bar - which ironically has less serving area than the front bar (tip: buy drinks in the front, sit in the back). Large garden/terrace area which unfortunately they have to close early to keep the local residents happy.

10th Feb 2008 - I really hate to give this pub a bad review as I suspect part of the problem is that the sort of people who don't have internet access are the sort of people who help make this pub what it is - deceptively rough. At first sight, this pub seems like a fairly generic sub-wine bar, providing food, some comfy looking chairs and a beer garden. However, the rudeness of the staff, and in particular the manager sort of warns you that not is all as it seems. My wife had her coat and bag stolen. She had gone to the loo and I turned my head for a second. So what you say? This could happen anywhere. Yes, but when I mentioned it to the bar man he just gave me a withering look and said nothing. One would expect some sympathy from the manager but when he came over to give us our (very late and incorrect order) food he snapped that it was our own stupid fault for not paying attention. I had only mentioned it as conversation, I did not expect him to do anything but it did seem very rude. I can't confirm this but when I told this story to a friend she said we were better off out of there as there was a stabbing just outside recently and fights are common.

28th Dec 2007 - I have to agree with many others who have reviewed this pub. It looks like it could be fantastic - great location excellent layout and a wide selection of beer and food. However, the staff are surly and appear disinterested in actually dealing with customers. I waited 20 minutes at the bar to get served, there were three of us waiting and no staff to be seen except for a grumpy cook who assiduously avoided eye contact when we tried to get his attention to ask for some assistance. My partner made the error of trying to complain and it seems the whole service ethos comes straight from the top - the manager told us to go somewhere else if we didn't like the service using language unfit for fullpint reviews! Sad, really, as in this location and with the effort that has obviously been put into designing the ambience this place could be wonderful. Unfortunately it's a nightmare and we are not the only ones to feel that way.

7th Mar 2005 - It should really be better than it is, but the Gypsy Moth isn't all that bad. The veranda bit at the back is really quite pleasant all year round and a nice suprise after walking through the dark and somewhat dingy bar. Beer is okay. There are worse pubs in the world in which to while away the time, provided it's not too busy .
