10th Feb 2009 - The Hope is a simple and unassuming small pub. It is small, yet doesn't perhaps get as busy as some of the pubs in the area. Whenever I have been in, space hasn't been a massive issue. It is not somewhere I would necessarily go for any other reason than out of convenience, but has a pleasant atmosphere and the staff are predominantly friendly.

15th Feb 2008 - A small and cosy pub with an unpretentious character. Best for a quick drink after work as they close quite early. Avoid Fridays when you get "kids" coming in for a drink before moving onto Fabrics!

27th Jan 2008 - Tiny pub just round the corner from Fabric. Open early in the morning for the market workers and closes around 9pm on some nights. Upstairs is a restaurant that opens for lunch and specialises in cooking the latest offering from the neighbouring meat market. A friendly enough place with good staff and a large cast of regulars who prop up the bar most lunch and evenings.

6th Oct 2007 - Doesn't appear to try very hard, with dull interrior and slighly sullen atmosphere. On the plus side, at my last visit the bar man was quite handy at first aid and you can always stand outside. Expensive

19th Apr 2007 - I'd have to agree with all of the previous comments. It is expensive. It does lack character. It does close early. It serves a fantastic pint of Guinness though.

4th Mar 2005 - The Hope feels like the official meat market pub and is a great place to stop off for a drink. A little on the pricey side so don't stay for too many but it's a nice enough place. Some people complain about the lights being too bright but I've never really noticed it myself.

21st Oct 2004 - Ok pub but v. expensive for what it is plus it closes at 8.30 pm(opens around 6am for market workers so is understandable). Gets busy on Fridays with office workers and pre-fabric crowd but... they do give out free sausages and sandwiches on occasion. If they'd sort out the over-bright lighting and reduce the prices a bit it'd be a 6.

9th Sep 2004 - don't get your 'hopes' up this place isn't anything particularly special. the only thing of note is that the place opens at 6am - so it's ideal if you want to slot in a couple of cheeky ones before work !

7th Sep 2004 - The Hope is a traditional Smithfields pub with close ties to the meat market. It's a decent local, but is too expensive, too bright, quite small and it shuts early. It does open at 6am, which can be useful, but don't try getting a drink at that time if you're already pissed - they won't serve you.

Food is served in the bar at lunchtimes only and consists of 'Big Meaty Sandwiches', this is not a place for vegetarian food. The Sirloin Restaurant upstairs also serves between 7 and 10 AM and in the evenings until 9.

The interior is nice and cosy, not too big, with frosted windows to keep out the prying eyes. Facilities are poor, but there isn't really the room for even a dartboard. It has a good locals atmosphere with most people in there seeming to know the bar staff when we visited.

Altogether a nice place to pop in after (or before) work. Make a nice work local for those not fussed about sporting facilites and cost.
